Day 5
Random Thoughts
If you play “punch buggy” you’ll be sore here. There are VW bugs everywhere. By day 3 the guys had to stop hitting each other.
Interestingly enough… Burger King is way bigger here than McDonalds. We’ve passed some huge BK’s and not even seen a MCD’s. Daniel told me that’s because BK came here first and everyone loved it and MCD’s came later.
Traffic is not too bad, but it moves quick and you have to be wise when near a road. Slowing down for others does not happen a lot. The horn is used a lot too.
A lot of families simply sit outside at night and talk. It’s so hot during the day and even at night that they spend time just talking and chilling outside.
Beach
We had the opportunity to spend the morning at a beach about 30 minutes from Merida. Many of us did not have beach towels and we were not able to acquire enough hammocks in time so we stopped at Costco on the way there to get beach towels. Yep, Costco. That was fun! Little know fact about me- not only am I a coffee snob, I’m also quite a fan of the non-alcoholic Pina Colada smoothie thing. All that to say- if you find yourself in Merida, Mexico- do yourself a favor and pick up a Pina Colada at the snack shop outside. Incredible. I had 2.
The beach was a ton of fun. I hung out in the ocean a little bit, spent some time swinging in a hammock chilling and had some great time sitting on a rock overlooking the ocean listening to some great music and having some time to simply be. Our team had a blast and I think it was great timing for us. After that experience I think I understand a bit more why people like to chill on a hammock at a beach. Wow. I need to do that again soon.
VBS
Tonight was our last night to do the VBS for the kids. I could not be more proud of a group of people than I am our team. They knocked it out of the park. So much love, fun and good times. The lady who worked at the church was so kind and gracious and said the nicest things about our group. They got all the new students info and will be following up with them. It’s cool seeing things that were planned back home come to light here. And of course lots of things changed. For instance a big deluxe game ended up being duck, duck, goose which the kids loved. So grateful for Shalom Church for trusting us to represent them in helping lead this VBS. The pastor at the church we did VBS at said “Es fantastico and God Bless You” so many times. We drove off tonight and I was humbled to serve alongside this team.
After VBS we went back to Shalom and then went out to celebrate for some ice cream to a local place with some of the staff and folks who helped out with the VBS. Good times!
Tomorrow we are back on the job with construction for the day and tomorrow night we are taking a bus tour of Merida to learn more about some of the history of this cool city. I can’t believe that we only have 2 days left here. It’s gone by so quickly… tonight at dinner one of the 8th grade guys said “I wish I could stay here for a month.” If you knew the student you would be crushed by how powerful that statement is. God is moving in hearts in a cool way. We are grateful to serve Him here.
